Revitalizing Borama as a Tourism Destination

Park Design Initiative for Borama Green Areas

10/26/2024Borama, Somaliland

🌟 Introduction

Borama is a naturally beautiful city with strong potential to become a key tourism destination in Somaliland. Its green areas—especially the Borama Plains—offer an ideal environment for recreation, tourism, and community engagement. Recognizing this opportunity, Awdal Development Fund (ADF) has developed a proposed park design to revitalize Borama's green spaces and transform them into a public tourism and leisure hub.

Our goal is to make Borama not only a place to live—but a place to visit, invest in, and enjoy.

🔍 Why Focus on Tourism Development in Borama?

Tourism is a powerful tool for urban development and economic growth. By developing Borama's green areas, we can:

  • Create employment opportunities for young people
  • Support local businesses and vendors
  • Enhance the city's image and attractiveness
  • Promote environmental protection and sustainability
  • Encourage community pride and cultural identity

Tourism has the potential to become a major source of income for the city if properly planned and developed.

📊 Challenges Facing Borama's Tourism Potential

Despite its natural advantages, Borama currently faces several limitations:

  • Lack of developed recreational parks
  • Limited tourism infrastructure
  • Insufficient investment in public spaces
  • Low engagement of the private sector in tourism
  • Limited coordination between stakeholders

Without proper planning and investment, Borama risks missing out on a valuable economic opportunity.

🚀 Our Intervention: Borama Park Design Project

To address these challenges, ADF developed a conceptual park design for Borama's green areas as a foundation for future development.

This work was carried out in close collaboration with the Municipality of Borama and with the support of the former mayor, Mustafe Qabile, who provided strong leadership and cooperation throughout the process.

The park design includes:

  • Green recreational zones
  • Walking paths and seating areas
  • Children's play areas
  • Small business spaces and kiosks
  • Landscape and environmental improvement concepts

The design aims to encourage investment and guide future construction in a structured and sustainable way.

📊 Impact (Expected Outcomes)

If implemented, this project will:

  • Position Borama as a recognized tourism city
  • Create jobs for youth and local residents
  • Generate income for surrounding businesses
  • Improve the city's appearance and livability
  • Attract investors in the tourism and service sectors

✨ Key Takeaways

  • Tourism can drive economic growth and job creation
  • Public spaces are essential for urban development
  • Urban planning transforms cities into economic hubs
  • Borama has untapped tourism potential

💡 Closing Thoughts

Borama has the natural beauty—what it needs now is action and partnership. The Borama Park Design Project is not just a vision; it is a practical roadmap toward a more vibrant, economically active city.

ADF invites development partners, private investors, and tourism stakeholders to join us in making Borama a source of opportunity, employment, and pride for all.

Together, we can transform Borama into a city that works—and welcomes the world.
